Orduña has an excellent location as a tourist destination, just 40 kilometres from two of the capitals of the Basque Country: Bilbao and Vitoria-Gasteiz. It is surprising for its history, its uniqueness and its peculiarities.

It is undoubtedly one of the most historically significant municipalities in the territory of Biscay. The only one of the 21 towns in Biscay to hold the title of historic town as a product of its economic and strategic importance.

Guided tours of the historic centre

Taking part in a guided tour is the best way of getting to know this cultural story and getting to experience its artistic and monumental heritage. We can visit the Town Hall, with its council tower and part of the defensive wall; or the fortified church of Santa María with the extraordinary late Gothic altarpiece of Flemish origin and its walkway.

The tourist office organises guided tours every Saturday at 12:00 noon, and group tours can be arranged outside these hours. The Sanctuary of Antigua, which is open every day of the year between 11:00 and 19:00, and the Museum, which is open on holidays, also surprise visitors.

In Orduña there are several wineries producing txakoli: a type of wine made from local varieties and whose roots go back to the Middle Ages.

The tourist office organises a visit to the Gure Ahaleginak winery on the second Sunday of the month at 11:00 am. They share the secrets of winemaking, tastings and food and wine pairings. The tourist office has a shop, not only offering txakoli, but also preparing packages, baskets and gastronomic gifts that include the famous local artisan confectionery.

Orduña birding

Birding

Orduña is located in an open valley surrounded by the Sierras Salvada and Gibijo. A good part of it is included in the Red Natura 2000 network and has the category of Zona de Especial Protección Avícola y Lugar de Interés Comunitario (Special Protection Area for Poultry and Site of Community Interest).

This is why Orduña and its surroundings are a real treasure trove for birdwatching enthusiasts. The tourist office of Orduña is one of the technical Birding Offices of the Basque Tourist Office network and organises visits to enjoy Birding.
