This century-old funicular takes you from the heart of Bilbao to the summit of Artxanda in just 3 minutes, offering spectacular panoramic views of the city. Discover Bilbao from a unique perspective!

The ‘Funi’, which has been running for over a century, is one of the symbols of the city. It connects the banks of the Nervión with Artxanda’s slope. It does so by overcoming a 225-metre drop in a 770-metre route, with a maximum gradient of 45% and a carrying capacity of 70 people. It takes 3 minutes at 18 kilometres per hour. But it takes 180 seconds to completely change the view of Bilbao.

From the center, it is enough to cross the spectacular Zubi-Zuri or to enter the Campo de Volantín riverside promenade. Opposite is the Plaza del Funicular, the heart of the classic Castaños neighbourhood. It is worth taking a few minutes to have a drink on any of the terraces and watch Bilbao life go by.

Don’t miss the opportunity to see Bilbao from above. Get on the ‘Funi’.

Funicular de Artxanda views

Once in Artxanda, the skating rink, the wooded areas, meadows, sports areas, restaurants. And, above all, the views. It is like having a raised-relief map: the Guggenheim, the Iberdrola Tower, the Basilica of Begoña, the symbolic chimney of Etxebarria, San Mamés, the Old Town. The estuary reveals its meanders, sheltered by the slopes of Malmasin, Pagasarri and Ganekogorta. To the east, the hills and limestone cliffs of Duranguesado break the horizon.

Suddenly, anyone can understand Bilbao perfectly and find their way around depending on where their accommodation is located. Following the promenade of viewpoints, on a sunny day, you can see the port and the sea. And to the north, the airport with its plane flow and the hills of the Txori Herri.

Artxanda Funicular

Any of the picnic areas and restaurants meet expectations. There is the possibility of going down the hill towards the Txori Herri slope and taking a train connected to the metro at La Ola which will take you back to the centre in 5 minutes.

Don’t miss the opportunity to see Bilbao from above. Get on the ‘Funi’.
