Weekend markets in Bilbao

Every weekend, the Arenal market stalls become the hub of local produce in Bilbao. On Saturdays, the Gure Lurreko market offers the best in locally sourced goods, with direct sales from local farmers; while on Sundays, the scent of flowers and the vintage stalls transform the promenade in front of the Arriaga Theater into a must-visit destination for discovering the essence of Basque culture.

Every weekend morning, in the market stalls of the Arenal, right by the estuary, between
the Town Hall Bridge and the Arenal Bridge, with the Arriaga Theatre silhouetted in the background, Bilbao slows its pace to stop and smell, see and touch. And shop. Saturdays and Sundays have their market.

LOCAL PRODUCTS – GURE LURREKO MERKATUA

Locally sourced produce and direct contact with the farmers. Every Saturday from 10.00 am to 3.00 pm. Farmers display their home-grown treasures. The deep green of the chard shines out. Beans wait in burlap sacks. Cheese, honey, bread, cured meats, flour, biscuits, txakoli, canned goods…

There are no intermediate dealers. Those who have tilled the land look you in the eye, explain the harvest, recommend the perfect time to eat it, and stand by their work. Shopping baskets are filled with authenticity. The fruit tastes of the Enkarterri sun and the vegetables retain the early morning dew of Arratia, Uribe, Mungia or Gernika.

FLOWERS (AND MORE)

Every Sunday from 9.00 am to 3.00 pm. As well as flowers, plants, bouquets and so on, there are also stalls selling collectables: coins, stamps, comic books and old tomes.

Hundreds of flower pots take over the paving slabs. Petunias, geraniums and delicate orchids await their turn. The florists’ expert hands wrap stems in tissue paper. The scent fills the fresh air. People search for the perfect cutting, the seasonal seed or the bouquet to put a smile on someone’s face.
