Dreamy waves, crystal-clear estuaries and mysterious seabeds offer extraordinary summer experiences in the region.

Bakio Bizkaia

Mundaka & Bakio

Mundaka is always a must-visit destination for surfers, thanks to its famous left-hand wave off the Santa Catalina chapel. Schools such as Mundaka Barra Surf and Gudari Caribe provide equipment for the brave. Nearby, Laga displays wild beauty beneath the Ogoño rock and is perfect for paddle surfing.

The nearby town of Bakio, with San Juan de Gaztelugatxe silhouetted on the horizon, guarantees consistent waves and the reliability of Lokal Surf Eskola for both lessons and equipment hire —highly recommended.

Bermeo & Elantxobe

Bermeo, with its bustling streets that embrace the fishing port, is an excellent base for diving

Trips to the nearby island of Izaro, the underwater landscape of Elantxobe —one of the most unique spots in Bizkaia— and the Mina Mari wreck in Matxitxako are must-see destinations for anyone who loves the spectacle of the seabed.

Sopela & Plentzia

Once in the Uribe Kosta region, it is in Sopela that you’ll find the largest concentration of windsurfers on beaches such as Salvaje and Arrietara.

The port of Plentzia, sheltered within the Butrón estuary, makes for pleasant sailing trips.

Getxo & Armintza

Getxo Marina sets sail on the Abra. A couple of companies offer jet-ski hire. Others specialise in sailing boats

The rocks off nearby Armintza also offer underwater adventures.

The estuary of Bilbao

Even the Bilbao estuary is home to canoes, paddleboards and boat trips of all kinds, allowing you to sail under the bridges and pass in front of Deusto University, the Guggenheim Museum and the Arriaga Theatre, not to mention the old Olabeaga quay —a sort of little Norway in Bilbao— which lies hidden behind the Carola crane and San Mamés Stadium.

With a bit of luck, especially later in the day, you might spot a trainera —a traditional fixed-seat rowing boat— training for the next regatta. Hearing the sound of the oars in the water and witnessin

Bizkaia doesn’t simply gaze out at the sea and the estuaries. It makes you feel them. Every wave and every cove invites you to swim, sail or dive, before raising a glass of txakoli in the gentle evening sun.
