Halfway between the fine Arts Museum and the Guggenheim

October 2025
The renovated Sala Rekalde is a benchmark for contemporary Basque art in Bilbao. Strategically located on Calle Iparraguirre, it is just 250 metres from the Fine Arts Museum and a stone’s throw from the Guggenheim. Visit this essential gallery on your cultural tour of the city.
Three of Bilbao’s most important visual arts institutions have undergone significant changes in recent months.
The Guggenheim has a new Director General, Miren Arzalluz, former director of the Paris Fashion Museum.
The Fine Arts Museum is in the process of expanding, which is expected to be completed in the coming months; the Agravitas project, designed by Norman Foster and Luis María Uriarte, is a milestone in terms of design, functionality and even impact on Bilbao’s urban framework.
The Rekalde Gallery, located halfway between the two venues, has recently unveiled a substantial renovation of its exhibition space dedicated to showcasing notable local artists.
250 METRES AWAY FROM THE FINE ARTS AND THE GUGGENHEIM MUSEUMS
According to its director, Alicia Fernández, the gallery has more than 1,000 square metres of space that “has been completely renovated and adapted to current exhibition needs”. The orientation of the Rekalde Gallery has been changed.
The new entrance at number 21 Iparraguirre Street, almost at Plaza de San José, is 250 metres from the Fine Arts Museum and just a little further from the Guggenheim.
Puppy can be seen from the door of the Sala Rekalde.
Sala Rekalde showcases contemporary Basque art. For example, between 25 October and 15 February 2026, it is hosting Trucada e imperfecta, an exhibition by Bilbao-based artist Rut Olabarri.
