Bilbao’s Semana Grande – Aste Nagusia (Big Week Aste Nagusia) 2024

Charangas can be heard in ports, beaches, meadows, hills and squares all over the land. But the most important celebration for miles around is, no doubt, Bilbao’s Semana Grande – Aste Nagusia (Big Week Aste Nagusia). With MariJaia (‘’Mrs. Party’’) omnipresent, tens of thousands of souls revel for nine long days between the 17th and 25th of August.

In many other localities there is a series of patron saint festivals that are linked and overlapping, until October. In all of them there are open-air dances, concerts, sporting events such as stonelifting, rowing boat races, log-cutting, esku-pelota or basket games, etc.

• Around 16th July, the Cármenes are held in Barakaldo and Amorebieta-Etxano;
• on 22nd July, the incomparable Madalenas in Bermeo and Elantxobe;
• on 1st August, San Pedro Advincula in Mendexa;
• on 10th August, San Lorenzos in Fruiz and Getxo;
• 16th August, San Roque in Gernika and Zeanuri;
• 17th August, Fisherman’s Day in Ondarroa;
• 29th August, San Juan Degollado in Bakio;
• 2nd September, San Antolin in Lekeitio (Festival of the Geese), Zeberio and Orozko;
• 8th September, Andra Mari in Bermeo, Urduliz and Lezama.

And there are many more.

It doesn’t take much preparation to feel like you’re taking part. Good food and good company are guaranteed.
