National Geographic has added Laida, Lekeitio and Gorliz to its list of recommended beaches
This summer, many beaches were selected by the international specialist publication Condé Nast Traveler to compete for the title of best beach in Spain 2025. Among them were several in Bizkaia and the Basque Country. After the voting, Laga, in Ibarrangelu, slipped into the places of honour. Fourth place, to be precise.
This is quite an achievement considering it was competing with coves located in the Mediterranean, the Balearic Islands, the Canary Islands and Galicia.
Thanks to its wild landscape, its waves which are perfect for surfing and the practice of other water sports such as sailing and canoeing, Laga is one of the most spectacular destinations on the Basque coast. It is located in the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve.
National Geographic also recommends Laga. It also recommends others, such as Laida, in Urdaibai, which is renowned for its golden sand and ever-changing configuration. Other recommended beaches are Isuntza and Karraspio in Lekeitio, and Mendexa. The former is located a few metres away from the magnificent Gothic church of Lekeitio, and hsa the island of San Nicolás on the horizon.
Furthermore, it can be reached on foot at low tide. The publication highlights the secluded and indomitable nature of Gorrondatxe (Azkorri) in Getxo, where the flysch can also be seen. Although it mentions others, National Geographic stresses the familiar, accessible and calm waters of Gorliz, which can be reached by metro from Bilbao.
Beaches to suit all tastes. And they’re in Bizkaia.
