A CULTURE-RICH ESTUARY

Bizkaia, along with its capital, Bilbao, ceased to be a major iron-mining region with ports and became a hub for the steel, shipping and chemical industries. However, all that is now a thing of the past. It has been transformed into a gastronomic destination that prides itself on its chefs and its unique culture.

The opening of the Guggenheim marked a first major step towards yet another transformation. The driving force of Frank Gehry’s architecture and the formidable exhibitions on display in its galleries have just generated an effect that is as positive as it is unexpected.

Over the last six months, the refurbishments to the Euskal Museoa, in the heart of the Old Town, and the Bilbao Museum of Fine Arts, in the heart of the Ensanche, have been launched. These are two ambitious, striking projects that breathe new life into two important cultural venues which are fascinating in their own right. Their significance is all the greater as they form a cultural and architectural axis alongside the Guggenheim.

Joining this hub are the unique Alkar Contemporary and the refurbished Sala Rekalde.

Culture and art flow through the Bilbao estuary, just as iron once did. And on the banks, gastronomy and the good life await. Let yourself be carried along by the tide.
