Fermín Álvarez, originally from the Canary Islands, has been working in the hospitality industry in Bilbao for three decades. He now applies his expertise at the Olagarro restaurant (octopus, in Basque) at 64 Rodríguez Arias Street, right next to the Ilunion hotel.
He was one of the winners of the latest fish pintxo paired with txakoli competition organised by Bilbao Centro.
He achieved this with a bite-sized dish based on hake, caramelised onion, octopus carpaccio and a touch of Canarian green mojo sauce, finished with a prawn cream.
At Olagarro, they serve octopus caught during many tides. But they also serve a magnificent rice dish with lobster, beef txuleton sliced over a tabletop brazier so that each person can adjust the cooking to their liking, and fish such as monkfish, cod, and turbot.
They offer interesting set menus starting at €38.
They serve a good breakfast and have a full pintxo bar. Their tortilla de patatas has also won top spots in competitions.
Olagarro is not all about octopus.
