Don Manuel, Bilbao’s leading bakery, has moved to Alameda Rekalde 35. Visit its artisan bakery to try the city’s traditional sweets, such as Carolina and Bollo de Mantequilla.
Big news in Bilbao this autumn: Don Manuel has moved his artisan bakery and cake shop from Alameda Urquijo to Alameda de Rekalde 35. It’s about 150 metres away. But now, Don Manuel’s sweet shop window occupies a more central location between Azkuna Zentroa and Plaza de Moyúa, two of Bilbao’s best hotspots.
Bright lighting, white décor and shelves and counters filled with traditional sweets. “The local specialities are butter buns, (bollo de mantequilla), Carolina, rice cakes, Jesuitas, Canutillos and Baldosas de Bilbao”, lists master pastry chef Manuel Angulo, who has been in the business for over half a century.
“The emblem of artisan bakeries is the Carolina, fresh, made daily and a highly perishable product”, emphasises Don Manuel. “Good coffee, good tea, good chocolate, combined with a butter bun or a rice cake, make for a great experience”, explains the master pastry chef.
In addition, cakes, chocolates, pastries, marzipan rolls, Christmas cakes, croissants and all kinds of irresistible temptations .
