Breweries you have to visit in Bizkaia

You will struggle to find this type of establishment outside Bizkaia. They were probably born as an evolution of the txakolis that were common in Bilbao and its surroundings until the end of the 19th century. The urbanisation of the then outskirts of the city led to the disappearance of those farmhouses and their vineyards.

Local breweries appeared. Some of them very famous. And they applied the txakoli formula to their establishments: tables and benches under trees, open-air terraces, drinks in jugs, very simple dishes and low prices.The success was immediate. Chorizo, omelettes and salads were soon joined by roast chicken on a spit.

Today there are many ‘cerveceras’ in Bilbao and Bizkaia. More or less sophisticated. Some have play areas or gardens for children. They are perfect for good weather, group celebrations and a festive atmosphere.
