bilbON Bizkaia Nº14 (summer 2025)
The delight of a warm summer
The coast of Bizkaia has never attracted large crowds of visitors in summer. It usually rains. Summer storms are not uncommon. Nor are whole days of light rain we call sirimiri. Both weather phenomena cool the nights. Dew falls. And it takes even a light cover to slumber with the window open.
The coastal breeze and the inland forests make for a pleasant experience. There is also the option of sailing or exploring caves; Bizkaia is home to some of the most spectacular caves in the world.
On top of that, cities that were once heavily industrialised now provide services. In Bilbao, for example, there are plenty of parks, some of which are lesser-known, such as La Misericordia, as well as promenades along the estuary and long, tree-lined boulevards. You can even practise water sports in the city centre.
At night, you will hear music playing away in the distance, the sound of a txupín announcing the birth of some popular fiestas, and the characteristic snap of a bottle of txakoli getting uncorked.
Bizkaia is delightful, also in summer.
